How we build
Nearly every deck we tear out failed in the same three places: the ledger, the joist tops, and the fasteners. So that’s where our build starts — long before anyone picks a decking colour.
Most builder-grade decks are fastened to the house by screwing the ledger directly to the outside of the siding, creating a pocket for moisture. Most of the decks we replace have failed at this location. We open the siding and flash it properly — and stucco and lap siding get different details, because they fail differently.
Southern Yellow Pine KDAT and incised pressure-treated Douglas Fir, sized and spanned for the load rather than for the estimate. Every joist top is wrapped in adhesive tape before decking goes down, so water that gets through the boards never sits on the wood.
Two options, honestly described. Fiberon Goodlife is the sensible choice. Deckorators Voyage is the better one — cooler underfoot, better traction for dogs, and a 25-year warranty. Every deck gets a picture-framed border; no cut ends left showing.
We use colour-matched Cap-Tor XD screws, not hidden fasteners. Hidden clips look cleaner on day one and cause problems later — they hold debris, they loosen, and a single damaged board becomes a project. This is a deliberate choice and we’re happy to walk you through it.
Our signature look
Three designs, all in the same finish. It is the detail that makes a Stoddard deck recognizable from the street.
Horizontal cable-line profile. The cleanest sightline, and the one that disappears against a view.
Wide-spaced vertical pickets with a flat top rail. Quiet, architectural, works on almost any elevation.
Traditional profile with a turned detail. The right answer on older homes and mountain properties.
